Advertising Inside Games: A Channel Beyond Gamers

Games reach a vast and varied audience, far beyond the stereotype of the young male gamer. In-game advertising lets brands meet them without interrupting play.

RESOURCES

Gaming is one of the largest forms of entertainment in the world, played on phones, consoles and computers by people of every age. Yet many advertisers still treat games as a niche channel, suitable mainly for other games or for brands targeting a narrow, young audience.

That view misses how broad the gaming audience has become, especially on mobile, where casual puzzle, word and strategy games are played by people who would never describe themselves as gamers. For brands in almost every category, games offer attention in a setting people have chosen to spend time in.

The main formats

In-game advertising comes in several forms, from the familiar to the more integrated.

Rewarded video.

Players choose to watch an ad in exchange for something in the game, such as an extra life or bonus item. Because the viewing is voluntary, attention tends to be high and the experience feels fair to the player.

Interstitials.

Full-screen ads shown at natural breaks, such as between levels. They work best when placed at genuine pauses rather than interrupting play.

Playable ads.

Short interactive demos, mainly used by other games and apps, that let people try an experience before installing it.

Intrinsic in-game ads.

Ads placed within the game world itself, such as on billboards in a racing game or banners around a virtual stadium. They appear as part of the environment, without stopping play.

Sponsorships and integrations.

Branded items, events or content created with game developers or within popular gaming platforms.

Why games can work for brands outside gaming

Scale and variety of audience.Mobile games in particular reach people across age groups and interests.
Chosen attention.Players are actively engaged, not passively scrolling.
Value exchange.Rewarded formats give players something in return, which can create a more positive association with the brand.
Less crowded. For many categories, fewer competitors advertise in games than on the largest social platforms.

Respecting the player

The fastest way to make in-game advertising backfire is to make the game worse. Ads that interrupt play at the wrong moment, cannot be closed or appear far too often frustrate players and reflect badly on the brand.

Good practice is simple: prefer formats players choose or that sit naturally in the environment, place ads at genuine breaks, keep frequency reasonable and make sure the creative suits the tone of the game. Brands should also check where their ads appear, since games vary widely in content and audience.

Measuring in-game campaigns

Rewarded and interstitial formats can be measured much like other mobile video, through views, completions and actions taken afterwards. Intrinsic ads, which people see rather than click, are usually measured through viewability and attention metrics offered by specialist providers, along with brand lift studies. As with any newer channel, starting with a defined test and a clear question helps separate genuine impact from novelty.

Where the attention already is

Games are where a large and varied audience chooses to spend its time. For brands willing to respect the experience, with formats that reward players or blend into the world rather than interrupt it, in-game advertising offers attention and scale that many media plans still overlook.
